The City of Ferguson, like many cities, is concerned about the safety and well-being of their youth and how their safety impacts the community. What are the responsibilities of the citizens when there are at-risk youth experiencing unhealthy living conditions? There is an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child, and Ferguson has responded by providing a safe location for youth who feel that there is nowhere to turn. The new Ferguson Fire House #1 (200 S. Florissant Road; Ferguson MO) is now a designated Safe Place, along with Walgreens (190 N. Florissant) and the Emerson Family YMCA (3390 Pershall Road) as Safe Places in the City of Ferguson.
Safe Place is a national youth outreach program that provides immediate help and safety for all youth experiencing a crisis. The program additionally educates young people about the dangers of running away or trying to resolve difficult and threatening situations on their own.
Safe Place has a network of locations that includes; schools, fire stations, libraries, YMCAs and other private businesses including Walgreens and QuickTrips. The yellow diamond shaped logo is displayed outside of every Safe Place location and trained volunteers assist with youth service agencies or emergency shelters throughout the community. The program is coordinated by Youth In Need.
